At this rate, the country will need some 500 new cities in the next two decades. Cities and urban development will need to use innovative technologies and solutions to manage the growing demands on the city infrastructure that delivers vital services. Keeping this in mind, it is critical to build safer cities which are sustainable and have the required smart enablers and solutions to manage growth, while providing an improved quality of life for the residents.

While building safe cities it is important to take cognizance of the fact that energy today is a scarce and precious resource. Hence energy and environment based technologies will be at the forefront. We welcome the next year with a hope to build not just safer but also greener cities.

With the divide between IT & telecom fast diminishing, today, there is greater synergies between IT & telecom technologies like Near Field Communication will attract the consumer and will make communication & transactions easier, faster and more mobile. Also with the shift from capex to opex model, cloud computing will become a reality.

Talking about communication, the unified communication market in India is estimated at Rs. 6,000 crore for the year 2010-2011 and is moving into a significant phase where overall awareness and customer hand-holding is necessary. Greater UC effectiveness like reduced TCO, greater efficiencies and optimization of resources need to be validated through case studies.  Among the verticals where we have seen and will see greater adoption of UC are: hospitality, SME & healthcare.
