SMEs : National Frustration
MSMEs are said to be the drivers of the economy as more than 80 percent of the enterprises fall in the sector. Their contribution to the national economy is no mean. Whatever little doles announced in the union budget is a fraction of relief benefitting a very small sector. The global recession causing economic slowdown in India has already resulted in the closure of thousands of units across the country. Millions of jobs have been lost causing frusteration amongst the community of small entrepreneurs. The sector is feeling betrayed, however.
In the absence of any strong lobby as in the case of large enterprises, the lot of small entrepreneurs has always suffered. The government seems to have no clear concept of the importance of supporting small entrepreneurs. When SME WORLD met the MSME Minister, Dinsha Patel, he appeared as anguished as anyone else. When the minister concerned appears handicapped and helpless then who will represent the case of Indian MSMEs is a big question.
It is time for the sector to consolidate and wage a war for their rights and security. Organising seminars and conventions will not help. We wonder what are the associations, federations and other trade bodies dedicated to the cause of MSMEs are doing? It is not a time to celebrate but to protest and sincerely and strongly at that. Now is the time to act lest we miss the bus. The \'recession\' has to be fought out instead of sitting and staring at the sky for the clouds to clear.
