Similarly, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) has cancelled the celebrations to mark one-crore production milestone in India due to destruction in Japan. The company is also assessing the possible impact of the calamity on its components import from its parent Suzuki Motor Corporation.

The natural calamities will have an impact on tourism too. The Buddhist circuits in the country—popular among Japanese tourists-will see a drop in the number of visitors.

I he number of tourists may drop by almost 25 per cent as travel agents are reporting cancellations. The Buddhist circuit is made up of places that were significant to Gautam Buddha's life. These include Lumbini in Nepal, where Buddha was born, Bodh Ciaya in Bihar, where he attained enlightenment, Sarnath, where he gave the first sermons, and

Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh, where he attained Parinirvana. The most affected will be the low budget groups.

Similarly, the business and other travelers to Japan will have a second thought on going there.

The bilateral trade between the two countries stood at more than ten billion dollars in 2009-10. India's major export items to Japan include steel, ores, chemicals, and pearls, while import products comprise machinery, vehicles, mechanical appliances and rubber. But people in India, as also elsewhere, believe that testing times are bound to re-invigorate the indomitable resilience of the Japanese people, its rise from the debris during the Great War being a testimony of this. The sooner it does this, the shorter will be the impact on India and the global economy.
