Impact of Natural Calamities in Japan on India
May 2011
Japanese Tsunami to take a toll on India's seafood exports India's two billion seafood export industry has taken a hit as a consequence of the Tsunami catastrophe in Japan largely because of disruption of trade from the sea route, the Far Eastern country being a major importer of the product.
The earthquake prior to the Tsunami and other events too will have a bearing on the India's exporting seafood units, industry sources say. Japan is a major buyer of seafood products such as shrimp, cuttle fish and squid, and the Indian frozen large de-veined black tiger shrimps are a delicacy in Japanese homes.

The heavily damaged Japanese North-Eastern city of Sendai was brimming with seafood factories and processing units directly connected to Indian exports, according to Mr Anwar Hashim, National President, Seafood Exporters Association of India (SEAI). Besides, Sendai, other cities too got affected.
"Although exports to Sendai have suffered, we hope that exports to Tokyo and Osaka would recuperate soon," Mr Hashim said.
Export Destination
After the United States, Japan is the most important export destination for India, accounting for 15.12 per cent of the total seafood exports in value. During the period from April-December of the current fiscal year, seafood exports to Japan were valued at Rs 1,358 crore.
