Harness Grassroot Talent by Reaching Out to Villages, Dinsha Patel Exhorts Entrepreneurs
Feb 2010
While inaugurating the two-day summit organized on the theme of 'Marketing: The Key To A Globally Competitive Indian MSME' by Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH) and Milagrow Business and Knowledge Solutions at the Indian Habitat Center, Patel urged the entrepreneurs to explore the vast rural belts where the real talent lies unexplored, un cared for.
Pravir Kumar, Joint Secretary, Ministry of MSME, Dr. H.P Kumar, Chairman, NSIC, Dr. H. Chaturvedi, Director, BIMTECH, Rajeev Karwal, Founder, Milagrow, Mr. Cecil Joseph, TCS, Head Education- Small and Medium Business, Dr. William Harmon, Dean and Coles College of Business, USA were also present.

Patel also mentioned about the various initiatives taken by the government for encouraging industries in MSME sector. He emphasized the Marketing Support Plan provided to these industries for participating in National and International Trade Fairs.
The Minister shared with the audience that Asian Bank has given a loan 150 million dollars for the benefit for MSMEs which will be disbursed to the MSMEs in the next 36 months. He also assured assistance to any MSME in person and also assured of complete cooperation from his office for the same. He informed that various programs of such nature have been included in the 11th Five Year Plan.
Addressing to the summit Rajeev Karwal talked about the objectives of the summit. He informed that Milagrow had conducted a research of 3000 MSMEs, which reflected that the 70-80% industries don't have a marketing department or they are clueless about e-commerce. One of the major weaknesses of the MSME industry is marketing. This summit aimed to cover all the challenges faced by these MSMEs, over the two days of discussion and deliberations.
While Dr. Jagdish Sheth, Marketing Professor, Emory University, USA addressed the audience through video conferencing. He compared MSMEs with a diamond and further added that 'marketing' is the polishing and cutting tool for it. He suggested that MSMEs needed to focus on packaging, quality of their product and branding. He raised four issues that these industries need to concentrate upon. These included access to market, awareness, social marketing media and low cost innovation.
