A group of enterprising doctors in Delhi has mooted a different kind of treatment for the patients by first ‘winning’ their hearts. Thousands of patients from across various tier II and tier III cities visit the capital everyday for medical treatment and many of them feel lost in search of the suitable hospitals and most of the leading hospitals have constant scarcity of beds. The condition of poor patients is apathetic and more often than not they fall an easy prey to the middlemen.
Dr. Prasun Kumar, working in a leading hospital in Delhi says, “Some of got together to form a group to guide the patients about the right hospital and to help them get the right treatment.”
The idea was mooted when they saw patients and their relatives being turned out from hospitals for non-availability of hospital beds. “Once I came across a patient with serious ailment who could not get admission in the hospital. I gave him primary treatment in the emergency itself and then decided to help him by arranging a suitable place for treatment. I saw to it that he gets immediate treatment,” Dr. Prasun recalls and adds, “immediately an idea struck my mind and I invited a few doctor friends to form a professional group for such helpless patients.”
“We went a step further by offering 24-hour service to poor patients and even providing assistance in prescribing medicines on telephone,” he says. “In fact we want to do much more even if it meant spending money from our sources.”
The idea clicked and they started helping patients. Eventually they were faced with raising income as the services they provide is absolutely free for poor patients. “The entrepreneur is us woke up and we thought of starting ‘Delhi Medical Tourism’ as we realized that medical tourism is said to be the second most popular industry now-a-days. The increase in the number of medical tourists each year denotes that the medical tourism industry will soon be on the boom. The patients who long for quick and effective cure of the diseases visit India on medical tourism.
The world class infrastructure and highly qualified team of doctors available in India promise a booming demand for medical tourism which is set to increase from the present 1.2 b to 2.4 b USD in the near future.
“Most of the medical tourism is handled by travel agencies or middlemen who would take advantage of the situation and make the visiting overseas patients shell out huge money. And we thought why can’t we start services at reasonable charges and by-pass the middlemen and spend the money earned from overseas patients on poor and the needy home patients, Dr. Prasun says.
Delhi Medical Tourism today specializes in providing affordable medical care and treatment packages to Indian and global patients. Unlike most other medical tourism centers run by non medical professionals, this unique centre gives the added advantage of being guided by a group of highly qualified doctors.
The Delhi Medical Tourism has tie-ups with the major hospitals of Delhi. These Hospitals provide treatment for a vast range of illnesses and surgery including joint replacement (knee/hip), cardiac surgery, renal and liver transplant, bone-marrow transplant, dental surgery, and cosmetic surgeries.
The group has an ambitious planning for the future. According to Dr. Prasun, “Our vision is clear. We have plans to run a chain of ambulance vehicles, tele-medicines, counseling and guidance. We would even help really needy patients with financial assistance. All this is necessary to put an end to the malpractices in medical centres.”
“Afterall what is harm in making money from affluent overseas patients and spending on the poor Indian patients?” questions Dr. Prasun.
