You Are What You Eat: Good Practices for Healthy Living
Nov 2010
Food is Medicine
Hippocrates proclaimed, “Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine by thy food”. In our scriptures we believe that, Anna (food) is Brahman (creator). It is quite evident that the food we eat should nourish us, sustain us and make us free from diseases. But these days 90% of the diseases are caused due to faulty food habits and 90% diseases can be reversed back to healthy condition by rightful eating habits. As Benjamin Franklin rightly says, “I saw few die of hunger; of eating a hundred thousand”. Many people have wrong notions about diet, for e.g. People often eat some labeled diet foods and drinks, which may have low calories but may not have any nutritive value and these diet fanatics only calculate the calories and do not count the nutritive value of the food. They satisfy themselves saying that they are on dieting, which is devoid of vitamins, minerals and enzymes. Non-nutritious foods and wrong eating habits increases cravings and many end up eating more non-nutritious high calorie foods. It reminds me of an English proverb, “A glutton digs his grave with his teeth.” Diet, are the foods consumed according to the individual needs for proper nourishment, retaining its nutritive and medicinal value.

There are five types of cooking methods, boiling, steaming, baking, roasting and frying. The first three methods are better, but, other two methods not only spoil the nutritive value, also there is formation of toxic substances. Cooking directly without using the bowls in the pressure cooker, the vegetables or pulses bring heavy loss of the essential nutrients. Cooking also causes severe loss of thiamine and riboflavin. It is always better, to use the wholesome sprouted pulses in their raw form. Draining the water out of some cooked items like starch out of rice, water from vegetables etc., causes loss of vitamins and vital nutrients.
Fast Foods are Fast Killers
God has given the natural colour to each food items. These days there is bad tendency of adding colours, additives, which are carcinogenic (cancer causing agents). One should be happy with Nature's colour. The processed foods or a food which are bottled by adding preservative though adds to shelf life of the food item but do not add to consumer's health or life. All these methods of making things faster have ill effects for example – “Fast foods are fast killers”, “Many dishes many diseases.”
The utensils used in cooking are also very important. In the present condition steel utensils are better and after cooking it should be put into porcelain or glass ware. Aluminum cooking causes lot of toxicity to the food. The base metals like brass, copper are not conducive because if adequate care is not taken it can make the food toxic. They are good to store water, provided routine thorough cleaning of the utensils is very essential.
