Just Dial is a leading local search company in India that bridges the gap between buyers and sellers by helping buyers find the right providers of products and services, while helping sellers improve the efficiency of their marketing channels. It caters to over 25 million unique users spread across 240 cities in India.
Now Just Dial is also launched in the United States. Just Dial was selected for its migration from a Microsoft DOS-based client server system to a web-based system powered by Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Just Dial was able to increase the flexibility and decrease IT and licensing costs by migrating from proprietary software to open source solutions.
Justdial employs 4000 strong work force and boasts of more than 1,25,000 SME advertisers with 3.5 million listings.
Bridging the Gap
The company bridges the gap between buyers and sellers by helping buyers find the right providers of products and services while helping sellers improve the efficiency of their marketing channels.
Just Dial recently bagged the Red Hat Innovation Award in the Carved out Costs Category. It's the frst Indian cmpany to bag this award.
SME WORLD spoke its Founder Venkatachalam Sthanu Subra Mani recently.
1. Justdial is resounding success. What was in your mind when you launched this service?
I have always had an entrepreneurial streak within me which propelled me to try various ideas, but with Justdial, I indeed envisioned a success right from the start. My conviction was fortified by the shared enthusiasm of my team and together we started off the service and expected thousands of calls and with the initial acceptance of the idea from customers and investors alike, we knew we would get there soon.
2. How did the idea take birth?
Initially due to circumstances at home, I had to take up a sales job. Whilst I was there, I saw people leafing through heavy books and lots of fine print to get that one small yet important piece of information. It made me wonder if it was possible to offer a similar service over the phone.
The service idea was at a concept stage that sounded good for some coffee machine talk. But I was convinced about it, because unlike the West, Indians seek the help of friends and relatives for information in their daily life. So I thought, why not launch a service to cater to this need? And that was not all; I often encountered people who would say, 'Ask Me, oh yes, but what's the number?' So this time, I was determined to start a service where people remembered the number and not just the brand.
