Delhi is fast stealing the limelight from Mumbai which is lacking its luster at least in the industrial and business count. There were times when a shopkeeper in Delhi would sell his wares proudly telling the customer that it is Bombay-made.
Times have changed now. Lot of water has since flown down the Yamuna and the political capital has moved on to spread its influence in the business world also. Statistics speak loud and clear. In the last one year alone, there has been a marked increase in the number of companies in Delhi and Haryana. Till March 31, 2009, Delhi had 1.57 lakh registered firms against 1.76 in the whole of Maharshtra. But come Januray 2010, the total number of companies in Delhi and Haryana alone jumped to 2.09 lakh. Whereas poor Maharshtra could make do with only 1.87 lakh.
NCR Gurgaon, on the ourskirts of Delhi, today finds a prominent place high up on the world\'s business map with enviable Electronics and Millennium cities within the region.
Delhi has scored over Maharshtra in terms of developing state-of-the-art infrastructure. Development of National Highway no.8 connecting Delhi with Haryana is one of the best in the world changing the entire skyline of the NCR. NOIDA and Greater NOIDA are again the cities to take pride of. All the who\'s who in multinational corporate have made NCR their home and hub in India.
The corporate of the likes of Bharti Airtel, HCL, Ranbaxy, DLF, Maruti Suzuki, Hero Honda, Aircel, Unitech and multinationals like LG, PepsiCo, Samsung, Honda Motors, Nokia, Coca Cola, Whirlpool, Syntel, Du Pont, and many others have made NCR their headquarters and country offices.
The gap between Delhi/NCR and Mumbai in terms of infrastructure, availability of facilities, operating Costs and revenue generation is increasing.
The launching of Metro rail further gave an edge to Delhi/NCR as commuting has becoming far easier, faster and comfortable. Whereas Mumbai still lags behind on many scores; the development in Delhi goes on unabatedly. “Delhi will be like Singapore once the Commonwealth games get over”, quipped an official of the Urban Estate Ministry.
What else makes Delhi score over Mumbai is the operating cost factor. In Mumbai, employees demand premium pay packages and other allowances while in Delhi this is not the case. With strong trade unions, the business and industrial environment in Mumbai is more stiffening than that in Delhi. The real estate costs are also higher in Mumbai than in Delhi/NCR.
Being the national capital, \'decision making\' and \'decision taking\' is faster in Delhi. Lot of fresh initiatives with easy schemes and hassle-free procedures encouraging and attracting entrepreneurs have been taken by the neighbourhood authorities in NCR.
Today, more and more professionals, fresh and experienced want to work in Delhi rather than in any state capital in all business verticals. Many of the country\'s best and the leading IT, ITES, BPO, LPOs, KPOs giants either have their presence or headquartered in the region.
While in Maharashtra only traditional development concepts are being translated, the case with Delhi/NCR is different. New business concepts with global acceptability are fast emerging for example outsourcing, real estate development, new patents and laws, are taking shape in Delhi/NCR. Being the seat of governance, businessmen from all over the country have to converge in the capital only.
The growth of service sector, the new global requirement, has significantly contributed to the economy and Delhi/NCR is primarily based on service sector. Maharashtra was known for the manufacturing industry only and has thus contributed as a secondary part of economy.
Delhi has a case and deserves to be declared as India\'s new Business capita.
