Doctors Must Stay Back or Pay Back

I was invited for a ‘dine out’ by a wealthy dental surgeon in Leicester (UK) a few years ago on the eve of my departure back home. His house was like a palace (of course by Indian standards). He had amassed a ‘wealth’ since the time he left India for UK for ‘greener pastures’ some three decades ago. His actions, lifestyles and way of living were most an “Englishman like’. He was a practicing dental surgeon and most of his ‘clients’ were Englishmen. “Why is it so?” I asked him. “You see all Britishers have great trust in Indian doctors as we are very humane in our approach. They like our way of treating patients. We are very caring and even share their personal ‘stories’. We laugh together and share their pain and also we show our whole-hearted concern with their health. On the other hand, British doctors are very business-like,” he reasoned.
However, the most common ‘Indianness’ I found in Indian fraternity there is that they regularly attended the Sunday get-together at the local “Mandir”. “We are very religious you see,” the dental surgeon confided in me. “Have you ever thought of the state of affairs in India? India needs doctors very badly as health services are very poor in the rural India especially. Have you ever thought of coming back home and serve the poor suffering Indians?” I shot him a question. His answer did not surprise me. “Now what can we do? We are here for a long time. Moreover what India would have given us; a marginal living standard and a life of struggle? At least we have made money here.”
The dental surgeon conveniently forgot that by getting costly education in India, he has a debt to pay pack to the millions of tax payers who spend billions of rupees on the medical education in India every year.
Thousands of doctors are still leaving the country and continue to make a mockery of the huge investments that we all are making with no check whatsoever.
The report by a Committee revealed that out of the 428 students who passed out of AIIMS between 1989 and 2000, 233 - a whopping 54% - left India to serve overseas.
Earlier a study ‘dubbed as first of its kind study’ submitted by AIIMS’ department of hospital administration had startling revelations to make. It found out that it takes Rs.1.7 crores to produce a single MBBS doctor at AIIMS by both direct and indirect services rendered by AIIMS including the cost of infrastructure etc. incurred during five and a half years of the study.
