What is World Class Anyway
Jun 2011
The fact is that every IIT and IIMs in India has a learned faculty who are themselves IIT and IIM alumni. In IIT Bombay more than half of its faculty is an IIT alumni. There is no justification in comparing Indian standards with those of the developed countries. One must bear in mind that India, all said and done, is far from developed. We have all kinds of problems – resources and environment. A nation of 1.2 billions mouths has fewer hands to work, and fewer facilities to manage the needs of the teeming millions. The developed countries do not have startling figures of poverty and have-nots as India has. It's people are yet poor and powerless, and a major chunk of the future citizens stand exposed to the imminent dangers of health, hygiene and education.
If India figures prominently high up on the intellectual and technical map of the world, it is a tribute to our fairly high standards of education. After all, India is a nation of people who have learnt to fight and yet survive with heads held high.
Mr. Minister, we are yet talking of reforms of all kinds. It is just around a little over six decades that we have been working without crutches. It takes time, however. Let's take pride in what we have achieved. It is not for no reasons that today the world sees India as a major economic power and 'the future' in the real sense. Because we work, and work to us is worship.
