It's Marketing War: SMEs Better Brace Up Now
May 2011
They are in a spree to take over every potential local market with well drawn business development plan and marketing strategy, supported with huge resources and manpower.
On the other side, economic liberalization has changed the market paradigm for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in India. Consumer durables constitute an important segment of the manufacturing sector. Prior to liberalization of the economy, consumer durables sector in India was restricted to a handful of domestic players who had a combined market share of 90%. With liberalization a spate of foreign players has come to operate in India. Most of them are strengthening their presence in India, expanding their reach to Tier 2 & 3 markets with some of them setting up production facilities in India as well.

The consumer goods segment in particular has undergone a sea change with overseas goods and global brands flooding the markets. While the threat of Chinese invasion on the Indian market is strong, Indian SMEs producing consumer goods, small tools and machinery may have reasons to worry. Products like torch lights, pens, umbrellas, apparels, toys, locks & electronics have become competitive in the Indian market. In India there are certain sectors invariably dominated by SMEs and these SMEs have been contributing significantly to the economy. Auto components, chemicals, engineering goods, food and agro products, sports goods, pharmaceuticals, gems and jewelry, IT and IT enabled services, leather and leather products, plastic goods and textiles are some of the prominent sectors, principally dominated by the SMEs. However, there is a huge potential of SMEs in the retail sector.
