Man with a Mission – Dr. Chukka Kondaiah

Dr. Kondaiah recently retired (2011) after serving as the Director General of National Institute of Micro and Small Enterprises (ni-msme) for eight long years. The institute was set up in 1960 with the aim of promoting entrepreneurship in the country. It has been making serious contribution to the development of MSMEs through academic schools and programs.   
Dr.Chukka Kondiah, Ni-MSMEHe was instrumental in shaping the development of the Institution with the support of Ministry of MSME, GOI. Under his able leadership, the Institute is self-sustaining and has been able to conduct programs on innovative entrepreneurship for 1.12 lakh national and international participants. He has proven his in-depth knowledge of the sector by providing consultancy and helped in execution of 84 projects around the world.
 
Molding the institutions curriculum, he introduced the Schools concept for effective organisation of knowledge dissemination and setup up special centres like National Resource Centre for Cluster Development [(NRCD) 2004], Intellectual Property Facilitation Centre [(IPFC) 2010] and Resource Centre for Traditional Painting [(RCTP) 2010] thus getting awarded relevant projects. He also promoted the creation of a State-of-the-art infrastructure by constructing a New Training Building, achieving a saving of about Rs. 50 lakh to the GoI as vetted by CPWD (2008). The institute has extended services to 10 international agencies like UNIDO, UNDP, ILO, GTZ, APO, OECD, ISBC JICA etc. during his tenure. 
 
Internationally, he was involved in projects like creation of the Policy Vision Document for Empowerment of Women through Enterprises for the Government of Mauritius (2004), series of training programmes for the Apex Bank of Ghana (2005-07) and the Commonwealth Secretariat (2005-08). He was involved in promoting the visibility and credibility of the Institute through collaborating with similarly-minded institutions/organisations (NAM-CSSTC, JICA, etc.). 
 
As a Resource Person, Dr. Kondaiah visited 8 countries in Asia, Africa and Europe for Entrepreneurship and SME Development. With his experience and exposure, he has chaired theme sessions in international conferences and workshops by organisations like AARDO, ISBC and CIRDAP, and received letters of appreciation. 
 
As the identified National Expert, he conducted survey on entrepreneurship among competitive SMEs in India, and submitted the report to Asian Productivity Organisation, Japan, with the permission from the Ministry (2006).
 
Dr. Kondaiah is an internationally acclaimed trainer, researcher and consultant in social cultural anthropology, entrepreneurship, IPR, CSR and development of MSME clusters with in-depth understanding of enterprise cultures across Asia, Africa and Europe.
 
He is widely recognised as an expert in behavioural sciences and applied social sciences, specializing in the application of the experiential learning method for personnel development and in the process, acquired niche competence in managing organizational growth. He displays a proven track record of human resource management with strong commitment to knowledge sharing, which can be deployed for selecting and motivating civil servants. 
 
His academic incline is evident from the half a dozen books, dozen journal articles, many study reports that he has authored, and presented well researched papers on various aspects of entrepreneurship and enterprise development at national and international levels. The latest publication is a volume entitled Entrepreneurship Development: Experience in Institution Building (2010).
 
With the experience and expertise gained during the past 25 years, he has the right competence and capability to lead organizations in the right direction towards progress, which facilitates meeting the objectives of the Ministry, for promotion and development of MSMEs.
