Grooming SMEs in Brooming ASEAN
Mar 2010
Geographical proximity and economic imperatives have been the primary pull factors in India's efforts to engage the ASEAN through different strategies. India is no stranger to Southeast Asian and regions beyond it, given it deep historical, cultural and maritime bonds with them. From ancient through middle ages, this great Asian civilization cast its influence on the geopolitical landscape of the region as well as its communities. During recent decade, India liberalised its economies to integrate with the global economic system and adjust to an altered regional power balance. India has been cultivating diverse strategies of building closer economic and political synergies with the region which is branded as the hub of Asian century. She thus moved, rather rapidly, from sectoral dialogue partnership to full dialogue partnership to summit status in hardly a time span of one decade viz. 1992-2002. It scaled new heights with the signing of the Framework Agreement on Comprehensive Economic Co-operation between ASEAN and India at the Bali Summit in October 2003.
Since then, India-ASEAN partnership aimed at exploiting complementarities and synergies in terms of factor endowments, economic structure and skills and capabilities in different areas such as information technology, pharmaceuticals, tourism, entertainment, human resource development, education, research in biotechnology, power, food processing, agriculture, health-care, financial services communication, space technology, energy security, industrial park, real estate management, logistics, infrastructure and so on. Over the last few years, collaborative initiatives have been launched between India and ASEAN in many of these sectors. Apart from merchandise trade, there are bidirectional flows between India and ASEAN in FDI, science & technology, tourism and manpower.
