Ahmedabad Unit Makes it Big with e-Commerce
Dec 2011
Food Processing Industry
Food processing industry is of enormous significance for India's development as it has linked economy, industry and agriculture in India, efficiently and effectively. The three pillars being together have synergized the development process and promoted the growth of the nation to a great extent.
There are 25, 367 registered food processing units in the country whose total invested capital is Rs 84,094 crore (US$ 17.81 billion), as per a competitiveness report of the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council. Mazda Ltd. is one such enterprise which has registered a tremendous growth in its export profile through e-commerce. Based in Ahmedabad, Mazda Ltd manufactures premium instant powdered soft drink mixes, food color, flavoring essence, rose syrup, custard powder, baking powder, vanilla essence, jams and soft drinks.
It was in 2005 when Shanaya Mody, Director of Mazda Ltd. discovered Alibaba.com, world's largest B2B marketplace while searching for an online promotional channel. “We actually started our food and beverage division with Alibaba.com and have been a Gold Supplier member for five years now!” said Shanaya.
The company has registered a creditable growth by 120% through Alibaba.com and today, Mazda Ltd has regular customers in Russia as well as many others in the U.K., UAE, Saudi Arabia and US. Says Shanaya, “The real breakthrough came when we decided to go for Gold membership which only meant maximum benefit from Alibaba.com. The Gold Supplier logo next to all our product listings helps build trust with buyers, giving them more confidence to do business with us. Now I get more enquiries than ever before. Now, 100% of our business comes from Alibaba.com.“ Last year alone, the company generated business of twenty million rupees (US$430,000). “Really e-commerce is the platform of the future as we save huge amount if finance, time and stress,” says Shanaya.
