The Passat is competing in the luxury segment and will be launched with the new environment friendly 'Blue Motion' technology. The state of the art technology will combine the features of low carbon emission standards as well as high fuel efficiency.

''This is of utmost importance given the rising crude oil prices as well as maintaining the high future emission standards. The models are expected to become hot favourites with the increasingly quality conscious Indian consumer,'' Mr Hackenberg said.

This is to be followed by the new Jetta, an up premium sedan. The launch will take place in the Autum season. The strategy is to have a calibrated approach to the two new launches.

The Passat was the first model Volkswagen brought in India in 2007. In 2008 Jetta was the second car that was driven in by the rapidly growing company in the country.

Given the phenomenal success of these two models, the auto major developed plans to introduce two new variants in this league.

Mr Hackenberg was upbeat about India for several reasons. These included its one billion plus population, its high GDP growth, rising incomes of the middle and upper class people and its plans to carry out an ambitious infrastructure development programme.

Mr Hackenberg commended the policies of the Indian Government and the congenial environment that was being created to facilitate major players like Volkswagen, who want to partake a bigger slice from the auto market cake.
