Knowledge management (KM) is widely accepted as a source of competitiveness. Today success and worth of a business depend more on its intellectual capital than on its physical.
New knowledge creation has received increasing attention, recognition and importance in recent past in the business world. Knowledge has emerged as the most important strategic resource for organizations (Toffler, 1990; Nonaka, 1991; Barney, 1991; Bartlett and Ghosal, 1993; Drucker, 1993; Stewart, 1997; Pillania, 2005a, b; Pillania, 2008a). It is not only the big organizations, new knowledge creation has increasingly become critical for small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) also. The need for knowledge renewal is particularly acute in SMEs (Pillania, 2006b; Martin et al., 2002).
Globalization of supply chains, rapid technological advances, and superior returns on intellectual capital makes it a strategic tool in the growth and success of businesses. KM-enabled SMEs are essential for competitive and sustainable growth. Increasing environmental standards and safety concerns, and the search for alternative fuel technology, are putting a further premium on knowledge creation and knowledge management.
The Role of Knowledge Management in the Competitive Process
The competitiveness is perceived to be closely related to technology capabilities and innovations which is an output of Knowledge management process. World Competitiveness Report 2010 has ranked India at 51 among 139 countries, 17th rank globally in terms of its financial markets, and 44th in business sophistication and 39th in innovation, which clearly indicates that India lags behind in terms of competitiveness.
