Labour Diversity in MSMEs for Inclusive Growth
Mar 2011
Contemporary global market, which is in an ever expanding mode, is witnessing a proliferation of creation of increased multicultural spaces. Information and Communications Technology; faster and cheaper connectivity in terms of travel, transport; easier and faster movement of people; easier and reduced restrictions for international business, export and import have all caused an explosion of multicultural communities. It is the treaties agreed upon by the nations under the aegis of World Trade Organisation (WTO) that facilitated an enhanced economic integration at a world level, leading to possibilities for more and more cultural interactions at all levels.

However, there is no sufficient data available to understand firm level diversity, especially in MSMEs where majority of Indians work. When it comes to diversity at worksites, what is available is female participation that stands at 13. 31 %, on an all India level. (3rd census of SSIs)
Increased Productivity
Enterprises in the developed countries have started to recognise the virtue of building multicultural work sites. Customer base of MSMEs is very much multicultural in the global market. Studies have indicated that labour diversity in terms of ethnicity; skills and demographics enhance significantly firm productivity. And it tends to stimulate innovation & creativity. Also, marketing opportunities are increased exponentially and business image is enhanced beyond borders and would result in increased productivity.
Indian MSMEs have to adopt such best practices and make their work sites more diverse and multicultural.
