Oct 2011
HALCON, a joint working group between Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Container Corporation of India Ltd (Concor) along with the terminal operator – Clarion Solutions, part of India's leading shipping and logistics conglomerate – Transworld Group, announced the commencement of air cargo services at Ojhar airport, Nasik. The infrastructure developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) at Ojhar will now be utilized for export and import activities by facilitating air cargo services from its Nasik base situated in Maharashtra. The entire state-of-the-art facility is managed and operated by Clarion Solutions, which is assigned as a terminal operator, ground handling operator and regulated agent. Ojhar airport has strategic benefits in terms of location and state-of-the-art infrastructure, making it a desired hub for air cargo services in western India. The strategic location of the airport gives it an edge over other air cargo complexes in Maharashtra. The Mumbai-Agra national highway (NH3) runs through Nasik. The city comprises of 4 lane expressway (under construction), giving faster connectivity to Mumbai. The airport also enjoys the road connectivity through other highways connecting key cities like Surat, Aurangabad, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmednagar, Dhule, Indore, Bhopal, Vadodara, Nagpur, Goa and many other cities. The airport is also poised better in terms of rail connectivity compared to any other air cargo complex in Maharashtra.
The Airport facility has modern radar, ATC, Met services, airport aides, parking space and most importantly night landing facility. Being strategically located and having state-of-the-art infrastructure, Ojhar airport will definitely have an edge, in view of the congestion that every airline faces today at Mumbai airport for night parking, landing and cargo movement as stated by PV Deshmukh, Managing Director (MIG), Hindustan Aeronautics. The facility at Ojhar airport comprises of full-fledged Air Cargo Complex, warehousing, integrated packing center for perishables, cold storage, screening, unitizing/ palletization, comprehensive ground handling services for airlines, CCTV surveillance, bar-coding, labelling, 100% power back up, customs with EDI linkage.
“Ojhar airport being dedicatedly operational for air cargo services will help to de-congest the traffic at Mumbai airport, which currently offers both air cargo and passenger services. It will also boost the EXIM trade in the state, as exporters of vegetables, flowers, fruits, automobile, pharma, engineering products, FMCG's etc will benefit a lot as instead of going all the way to Mumbai for exporting it through air they can directly do it from Nasik." Mr. Deshmukh further added.
Commenting on the commencement, Ganesh Krishnan, CEO, Clarion Solutions said, “We strongly believe that Nasik has all the potential to develop as a hub for air cargo services in western India. Being situated at the center of various industry verticals and its proximity to Mumbai Agra National highway, Ojhar airport becomes a real viable alternative solution for the EXIM trade.”
“Ojhar airport going operational for air cargo services will act as a cost effective and single window clearance facility for the importers and exporters community across various industry segments in Maharashtra. It will also help in de-congesting the existing air cargo complexes that are presently struggling for the desired space in and around the state.” Krishnan further added.
Discussing on the investments made by HAL at Ojhar airport and the benefits that can be derived by industry segments at large; PV Deshmukh, Managing Director (MIG), Hindustan Aeronautics said, “Through HALCON, we are pleased to announce the commencement of Ojhar airport for air cargo services. Our Airport is extremely well equipped and capable of handling AN-124 which is the heaviest aircraft in the world. We have invested nearly Rs. 70 crores to upgrade the existing infrastructure, like creating additional parking space, enhancing the Fire Category from CAT V to CAT X which as per ICAO standard for Airport is the maximum Fire category which any Airport has, Medical facilities etc, thus making Ojhar as a desired destination for air cargo services.”
V. Ramnarayan, Vice Chairman, Transworld Group of Companies said, “With the rapid growth of industry and commerce in India, it is imperative that high quality logistics support is provided for transportation of goods within India and to international markets.
Through the facility at HALCON, Nasik, Clarion solutions are poised to provide such services to customers.”
Kiran Kumar, CEO, HALCON said, “HALCON's state of art dry port facilities/services coupled with HAL's well equipped infrastructure is a unique combination with a vision to make the airport an Air Cargo Hub in the map of western India.”
With better road and rail connectivity, Ojhar airport will act a cost effective platform for importer and exporter community from industry segments such as agriculture, manufacturing, pharma, engineering, automobile, FMCG, etc operating in western belt of the country. These industry segments will now be able to utilize the air cargo services at Nasik, reducing the uncertainties like delivering the goods in defined timelines, while using road and rail transport.
