Managing Information Explosion: Data Management in SMEs in the Era of Information Explosion

Global era demands any business to be more competitive to sustain. Being informed is one of the primary methods to be competitive and when it comes to be informed, need of the hour is to ensure the uninterrupted flow of the information as well their perseverance.

 

Many enterprises save information indefinitely instead of implementing policies that allow them to confidently delete unimportant data or records, and therefore suffer from rampant storage growth, increased litigation risk, expensive and inefficient data management processes. The data may be in the form of intellectual property, bank account numbers, credit card information, customer and employee records and other sensitive corporate content.

 

According to Storage Strategies NOW (SSG-NOW) 2010 report, SMBs are experiencing an explosion of data growth not dissimilar to the one larger business counterparts experienced years earlier. Data is more dispersed and links between data is more complex than ever before. Thus with information explosion businesses have to grapple with Inability to secure and manage information consistently, leading to duplication, inefficiency and inability to use information efficiently.

Over the coming decade (2010 to 2020), digital information in India will grow from 40,000 petabytes to 2.3 million petabytes, twice as fast as the worldwide rate, finds an IDC study. This kind of data growth is a big challenge for organizations since buying more storage drains the enterprises in terms of the high costs and limited budgets involved.

 

Ajay Goel, Managing Director – India & SAARC, Symantec in an interaction with SME WORLD shared his experiences about the challenges in the age of Information Explosion and how they can maximize their business profits without losing the data as well as tools available for SMEs.
